COMMUNITY
BWC welcomes women of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of musical experience.
The chorus is a safe, multigenerational community where women can experience
the joy of music together, improve singing skills, and connect with
each other artistically, spiritually, and socially.
CREATIVITY
For many members, participation in BWC is a way of taking care of themselves.
Chorus rehearsals are a structured time apart form the demands of ordinary
life. Singing provides a creative experience that many describe as
meditative or spiritual.
SONG
The heart of the Chorus experience is learning songs drawn from choral
traditions around the world. Many songs are taught orally.
Musical selections, chosen by Director Becky Graber, give voice to the
values of Chorus members, celebrate universal themes, and are spirited
and inspiring. The Chorus approaches music as a medium with unique power
for speaking truth.
Public performances in the winter and spring provide a focus for preparation
of songs and enable Chorus members to share their music with the wider
community. Audiences value the Chorus's accessible repertoire and authenticity
of expression.
HISTORY
The Brattleboro Women's Chorus was founded in the fall of 1996 by conductor
Becky Graber, incorporated in the State of Vermont in January of 2002,
and recognized as a 501(c)(3) in April of 2003.
Since it's founding the chorus has grown to a group of 100 or so Brattleboro
area women and girls who sing together Wednesday nights and present two
annual concert weekends.
The chorus welcomes new members, in both the fall and the spring semesters.
There is no audition for the Brattleboro Women's Chorus, and all women
and girls over ten are welcome. Financial aid is offered to make it possible
for all local women to join our group.
The chorus operates in two semesters, one from September to mid-November,
and the second from early February to mid May. The chorus performs very
occasionally for special events in the Brattleboro area, and offers workshops
and arts activities for chorus members and the greater Brattleboro community.
MISSION STATEMENT
We prepare and present concerts, allowing women an opportunity to practice
and improve their vocal skills, harmonize with others, and increase
their self-esteem and confidence through music. Through community concerts
and workshops, performed by the chorus and incorporating professional
musicians, we provide rural audiences with an opportunity to experience
live, quality group musical performances and gatherings.
